The Culture That Connects Us | Four Seasons Resort Hualalai
Not long after Four Seasons Hualalai had its grand opening, in through its doors walked a local professor who everyone just calls “Uncle Earl.” When he was a child his mother instilled him the notion that it was his duty to honor his culture by sharing it. She taught that it was imperative he not hide it from future generations. He took this to heart and spread his culture, and his aloha.
He went on to study Hawaiian history, then returned the gesture and gave thanks by working as a professor, teaching Hawaiian history to his students. Though he never learned the language as child, he eventually taught himself Hawaiian through the slow yet rewarding action of picking up an ukulele and learning the traditional mele (songs).
When Four Seasons Hualalai opened, Uncle Earl saw an opportunity. He wanted to connect guests to the profound respect and deep love for the land and people. He now manages our cultural center—the very first of its kind at a luxury resort.
